SPARC - Society for Promoting Art and Recreation in the Community

New to Detroit in 2006, SPARC has major plans for 2007 and beyond. Here are just a few words to describe where we are headed.

Our Mission Statement:
The SPARC fosters community growth through interactive art and recreational opportunities.  We seek to create, display, and support art that inspires action and connects people by moving them from passive spectators to participants.  We believe this inspires positive creative change in the participants and in the wider community.

Objectives:

  •   Produce and promote events which invoke a strong sense of community and social responsibility in Detroit
  •   Promote interaction between residents of all of Metro Detroit
  •   Promote the values listed below

 Values:

  • Participation by all members
  • Inclusion of all who want to offer their help
  • Community building
  • Supporting local artists
  • Cooperation with others
  • Leaving no trace at events

Proceeds:

Volunteerism and donations -- of time, talent, effort and goods -- are a key component of The SPARC's operations. The SPARC generally does not reimburse for contributed labor, even that put forth by members of the Board and key project staff.  We are all participants giving of our time and efforts to move the greater goals forward.  We will provide clear accounting to our community and participants.

Funds generated will be used to support future projects of The SPARC and may be used to support the work of fellow organizations with similar goals.

Communication:

  •  SPARC will use hand flyers, announcements at public and government events, email, PSA's, radio, television, and the web to communicate
  •  Post notice of planned events by email one month prior to the event
  •   Post notice of work days by email at least one month prior to the event; the scheduled work for the specific day may be posted as late as a week prior to the actual date

Goals:

  • Increase interaction and pride in the community
  • Creating recreation and art in order to build a stronger community in Metro Detroit
